Home/Texas/Houston/Codes in Force

Which codes apply to MEP drawings in Houston?

Houston enforces its own Houston Construction Code, based on the International Codes with city amendments.

The City of Houston adopts the International Codes as the Houston Construction Code, with local amendments, and reviews MEP drawings at the Houston Permitting Center. Electrical work follows the NEC as adopted by the city, and Houston has its own floodplain rules that affect where equipment can go.

  • Building & residential — Houston amendments to the IBC and IRC
  • Electrical — NEC as adopted in the Houston Electrical Code
  • Plumbing & mechanical — Houston's adopted plumbing and mechanical codes
  • Energy — IECC as adopted by the city
  • Floodplain — Chapter 19 floodplain rules for equipment elevation

Home/Texas/Houston/PE Stamping

Do Houston, TX MEP drawings need a PE stamp?

It depends on your project and your AHJ — we check before you pay.

Commercial MEP drawings in Houston generally need a Texas-licensed PE seal. Many single-family remodels and additions can be permitted without one. The Houston Permitting Center's rules for your project type decide.

Engineers who seal drawings in Texas are licensed by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS). If your project needs sealed MEP drawings, we confirm during scoping whether a Texas-licensed engineer can seal your discipline and scope, and we put that in writing in your quote. If we can't arrange the seal for your project, we tell you up front, so you can have your own engineer of record review and seal the set. You never pay for drawings you can't submit.
