Home/Ohio/Codes in Force

Which codes apply to MEP drawings in Ohio?

Ohio writes its own statewide codes through the Board of Building Standards.

The 2024 Ohio Building Code, based on the 2021 IBC, took effect on March 1, 2024. Ohio also has its own Residential Code of Ohio for one-, two- and three-family homes, and Ohio Mechanical and Plumbing Codes. Certified local building departments enforce them, and the state reviews projects where no local department is certified.

  • Ohio Building Code (OBC) — commercial, based on the 2021 IBC
  • Residential Code of Ohio (RCO) — one-, two- and three-family dwellings
  • Ohio Mechanical Code — based on the IMC
  • Ohio Plumbing Code — based on the IPC
  • Electrical — NEC as referenced by the Ohio codes
  • Energy — IECC as adopted in the Ohio codes

Home/Ohio/PE Stamping

Do Ohio MEP drawings need a PE stamp?

It depends on your project and your AHJ — we check before you pay.

Ohio requires drawings for most commercial buildings to be sealed by an Ohio-registered architect or engineer. Work under the Residential Code of Ohio usually doesn't need a seal.

Engineers who seal drawings in Ohio are licensed by the Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. If your project needs sealed MEP drawings, we confirm during scoping whether an Ohio-licensed engineer can seal your discipline and scope, and we put that in writing in your quote. If we can't arrange the seal for your project, we tell you up front, so you can have your own engineer of record review and seal the set. You never pay for drawings you can't submit.
